Winners of the Christchurch South Lit Quiz - 2016

On Thursday 18 August, two teams from Springston School travelled to Somerfield School to compete in the annual quiz. The teams had been reading and training for the quiz since the beginning of Term 2. There were twelve books to read and learn; 6 novels and 6 picture books. The two teams chose their names and made team flags that were judged on the night. Our teams were called Shot, Boom, Read! and 6 Red Reading Hoods. Team members were; Gemma, Aria, Adele, Molly, Toby and Georgia; Rosie, Sonya, Joseph, Lucy, Darcie and Xanthe, Estelle, Brigid and Deklyn.

The questions were on the text and the pictures and there were ten questions on each book.

Mrs P was the question reader. There were 3 minutes to write down the answers to each set of questions. The scores were given at the end of Round 3 and Round 8 and then not again until the end. We had a guest speaker, Soraya Nicholas, who spoke about how she became an author, what books she had written and then she read some of her latest story. Later Soraya signed bookmarks for the children and one lucky school won a set of her Starlight Stables books.

Then the winners were announced. Oakland Geniuses were 3rd, Somerfield’s Phenomenal Readers 2nd and our Shot, Boom Read! won by 4 points! Our 6 Red Reading Hoods were 5th out of the 21 teams competing.

Each member of the team got to choose their own book prize and were presented with the trophy. As winners we get to be hosts again next year.

This is the third year in a row we have won. Well done to our Springston Lit Quiz Team and our fantastic Librarian - Karen Winter!

Christchurch South Lit Quiz

On Thursday 6 August, Springston School hosted the Christchurch South Lit Quiz at Somerfield School. Our two teams were a mix of Year 3 to Year 6 children who had read and studied a set of 12 books, and had to answer 10 questions on each book.

After Round 4, four teams were on 35 points, after Round 7 there was a split on points but it was still very close.

Our team "The Village of Readers": Nina, Kaylee, Jess, Gemma, Joseph and Toby, were thrilled to win by 1 and 1/2 points and "Springston 12 Eyes": Lucy B, Sonya, Maggie, Anna, Darcie and Brigid only just missed out on 3rd place by 2 and 1/2 points.

The winning team got to choose a book prize and we get to host the quiz again next year. The highlight of the night was the guest speaker, Desna Wallace - author of My Story: Canterbury Quake. The audience listened attentively and had the opportunity to ask questions and get books signed.

A special mention must go to Mrs Winter for all the time and effort she put into helping prepare the team members. Thanks to all the parents and staff members who helped on the night. Thanks also to our two reserves: Adele and Tegan.

Jess: It was fun and hard.
Gemma: Some questions were really challenging.
Lucy: Desna Wallace was amazing.
Maggie: I would to thank Mrs Winter and all the people who helped out on the night.
Sonya: I enjoyed being in the team for the first time.

The team's favourite book was: Teddy One-Eye: The Autobiography of a Teddy Bear, Author Gavin Bishop.
